Offer Wimbledon raises tension within golf club

maandag 12 februari 2018

The All England Lawn Tennis Club has made a multi-million-pound offer for the Wimbledon Park Golf Club in an effort to fast track its plans for expansions.

The All England Club bought the freehold of the golf course from Merton Council for as little as GBP 5,5 million in 1993 already, on to learn that the golf club has a lease that expires in 2041.

Wimbledon wants to land to stage their qualifying tournament. Two years ago Wimbledon offered GPB 25 million to convince the golf club to surrender its lease prematurely. The new bid is believed to be higher than what was offered previously.

Currently the golf club makes GBP 1,1 million per year by providing Wimbledon with parking space during their main event.

The bid favours some 500 long-service members of Wimbledon Park Golf Club as they will stand a chance of pocketing an amount with five digits instantly but will see another 300 members left with nothing. The 300 have joined the golf club in the past 10 years and are not entitled to the compensation.

Members pay a GBP 3,000 joining fee and an annual subscription of GBP 1,425.
